Introduction

Japan, Between the Lines

You can give someone else's “no” a voice. But you cannot negotiate on their behalf.

In Japan, there are people whose job is to do just that.

A job title rarely tells the whole story. Why does the work exist? Who needs it? And what happens when doing it well means resisting the urge to help?

Japan, Between the Lines explores less familiar jobs in Japanese life through short stories.

After each story, we look at the real work behind it: why it is needed and how it works, with links to our sources.

We want to understand Japan through the everyday needs these jobs meet, without assuming that every job we cover is unique to Japan.

Our first story follows a furniture restorer trying to turn down a deadline her father agreed to—and the telephone relay operator who must deliver her answer.
